The entire project is formulated by frustrated socialist activists who believe innovations in life saving technology should not be controlled, regulated and distributed at the will of for-profit companies. As such they form a community in direct response to Apple called Crapple.
I also proposed an idea to name the community NHS, as an homage to the future privatised health care system that has rebranded to remove its poor reputation. The NHS became a common theme among the projects in the class as a whole.
After a few sketches we had most of the IA down into:
• Community: A hub for improvements to the technology
• Buy: place to buy parts to construct your own Crapple watch
• Use: Interface to display the readings and actions of the watch
• Petition: The core focus to make legislative change to open source new technology
and began mocking the prototype in Sketch.
We moved the petition to become the main content of the home page, as this is the primary goal of the community. While the Crapple watch is a workaround to bring this technology to the masses in the meantime.
Many of the features are buried in the community page to encourage users to engage with the community to help develop the technology through diagnosis and more user data. This idea is taken from giffgaff who use the community as the first location to go to for support, and as it turns out it works really well, as many problems are quite common and have defined solutions.
In this page is also some social networks of the future. Pessimistically Facebook continues to survives as it will continue to stumble backwards onto a business model. GeoCities makes a comeback as people become frustrated not to have more ownership of the space where their content lives n the internet. And Elon Musks Pravda comes to fruition and becomes widespread as it proves to be very effective at highlighting the truth. Finally, Snapchat stories continue to infiltrate any social interface.
The community is still in firm underdog territory and does not have the capacity to manufacture the watch themselves, however the community has been able to compile a list of materials and 3D printer files to allow anyone to cheaply construct it themselves. The future will also have a comparison platform for purchasing anything, that is used to support smaller businesses in the fight with Amazon that includes coupons and incentives to but elsewhere, each of the materials will link to this platform.
